MIREILLE'S MUSINGS: Château D’Estoublon
In my corner of Provence, there is a small olive oil and wine producer that is well worth a morning or afternoon’s visit. Château D’Estoublon (in Fontvieille) has been in existence for many years but has undergone a rebirth since its purchase by new owners in 1999. Having hit its stride, the Château is now well-known by locals for its high-quality products and beautiful grounds.
I first came to know Château D’Estoublon through its superior extra-virgin olive oil with the AOC Vallée des Baux de Provence designation, made the “old way.” Hand-harvested from the groves each fall, all olives are pressed within 24 hours in the simple, traditional way (no refining or added chemicals) and the oil is bottled unfiltered. The oil has a slightly peppery finish, and in a day and age when there are many imposters on the grocery store shelves and you can’t trust that a product marked “extra-virgin olive oil” is the real thing, this local producer with high standards and an excellent product stands out.
Château D’Estoublon’s wine is also becoming worthy of praise. Vintners Eloi Dürrbach (also owner of Domaine de Trévallon) and Rémy Reboul produce just two wines, one red and one white. They are culture raisonnée (sustainably produced) with the philosophy of allowing the “terroir” to shine through (and it does).
The grand Château itself is a big attraction. There is now an épicerie where one can purchase olive oil and wine, as well as spices, pasta, honey, tapenades and even a jam made with olives. The owners, who have an incredible amount of energy, make their space available for weddings and other events, and they host seasonal fêtes and now even offer cooking classes. Do stop by if you find yourself in the area.
